Known as "the Blades" due to the city's cutlery heritage, the club has a long-standing history playing at Bramall Lane. Sporting red and white striped shirts with black shorts for most of their existence, their primary rivalry is with Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby.
Established in 1889 as a spin-off from Sheffield United Cricket Club, the team quickly made their mark by being among the founding members of the Football League Second Division in 1892, achieving promotion to the First Division just a year later. Sheffield United went on to clinch the English football championship in 1897-98 and secured FA Cup victories in 1899, 1902, 1915, and 1925. Despite a brief stint in the fourth tier in the early 1980s, the club boasts the rare achievement of winning all four professional English football divisions.
The team experienced fluctuating fortunes between the First and Second Divisions before regaining Premier League status in the late 1980s, scoring the first goal of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93. Relegated in 1994, Sheffield United navigated their way back to the Premier League in 2006 under Neil Warnock's guidance, only to be relegated the following season. Through ups and downs, including a five-year stay in League One, the club returned to the top-flight in 2019 but found themselves back in the Championship by 2021. Currently, Sheffield United is competing in the Premier League as of the 2023-24 season, having ascended from the EFL Championship.
