Currently competing in the Championnat National 3, which is the fifth tier of French football, Mulhouse boasts a rich history in the sport. The club's home matches are played at the Stade de l'Ill in the city.
Initially established as Fussball-Club Mülhausen in what was then Mülhausen, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, the club's geographical location has been influenced by the historic control of the Alsace region by both France and Germany. Since World War II and the region's return to France, Mulhouse has participated in French football leagues. It holds the distinction of being the second-oldest football club in France, following Le Havre AC.
Throughout its existence, Mulhouse has primarily competed in the amateur divisions of French football, with few significant achievements to its name. However, the club has spent a total of seven seasons in Ligue 1 and 27 seasons in Ligue 2. One of its key triumphs was winning the Division d'Honneur in 1928, along with seven Alsace Division d'Honneur titles regionally. During its time in Germany, Mulhouse secured the Gauliga Elsaß title thrice.
Notably, Mulhouse has played a pivotal role in the careers of renowned football figures such as Arsène Wenger and Raymond Domenech. Wenger, known for his successful tenure at English club Arsenal, began his managerial career at Mulhouse, preceding successful coaching spells at Nancy, AS Monaco, and Nagoya Grampus. Domenech, who also represented Mulhouse as a player, later managed the France national team from 2004 to 2010, following his managerial stint at the club.
